Rudolf Herfurthner is one of the best-known German authors of children's and young adult books. This material has already been awarded numerous prizes: A plea for civil courage.

Naomi's fate touches us and reminds us that she is not an isolated case. The focus here is on the child as a victim of violence.

New York during the Second World War: twelve-year-old Jewish boy Alan loves to play bat ball with his friend in his free time. But then he is asked to look after the new girl next door, Naomi, who has fled France with her mother to escape the Nazis. Naomi had to watch helplessly as her father was beaten to death by the Gestapo. She has been in shock ever since. Even in her new home, she doesn't speak to anyone and just sits around terrified in the stairwell. Alan is initially reluctant to visit Naomi regularly. His friends call her 'crazy Ida' and Alan fears for his reputation. Nevertheless, he accepts his new task - albeit reluctantly. At some point, he finds his old ventriloquist's dummy 'Charly' and takes it to Naomi. And lo and behold - after a while, Naomi takes her doll and lets it talk to Charly. They become 'secret friends', because under no circumstances must the Nazi-worshipping janitor's son Condello, who lives in the house, get wind of this. But problems are not long in coming.
